The Role of Policies and Regulations in Unlocking Fintechs’ Potential to Advance an Inclusive Digital Economy in Tanzania.
Fintechs can play a major role in advancing Tanzania towards a full-fledged inclusive digital economy by promoting technological innovation and integration of various financial market systems. They can act as key drivers of financial inclusion by improving the development and delivery of financial infrastructure and solutions through partnerships with financial service providers, policymakers, and regulators. This can lead to the development of financial solutions that meet the needs of many Tanzanians, especially the underserved. Developing a conducive business environment for fintechs to thrive is crucial for advancing Tanzania’s digital economy agenda. Therefore, it’s important that various stakeholders are convened to discuss how they can play a role in unlocking the potential of this industry.
In fact, among the recommendations highlighted in the UNCDF Fintech Startup Landscape in Tanzania 2023, is to facilitate dialogues between the regulators and fintech start-ups. Ecosystem facilitators should leverage the hubs, accelerators, and other associations targeting start-ups to ensure that the concerns and needs of fintechs are collectively brought to the attention of the regulators and, conversely, that policies and regulations established by the regulators are collectively communicated to the start-ups to eliminate misinformation and/or misinterpretation.
FSDT’s Business Plan 2023-2024 also aims to support in the development of a Fintech Policy and Regulatory framework to create an improved innovation environment. Therefore, such dialogues between fintechs, regulators, policymakers and FSPs are a wonderful opportunity to convene a dialogue and uncover key obstacles and areas of opportunity.
